Welcome to Day 4 of the 7-Day Mini Course, “Free Tools for Freelance Writers: Save BIG While Starting Your Writing Business.”
Today’s focus is on free ways you can communicate with your clients – and give your freelance business a more professional flair.
Chances are, you have a phone. Maybe you have up dedicated landlines a while back and went strictly cell phone, but that doesn’t matter.
You have a phone.
Depending on your circumstances, though, others might use that phone – a spouse, a child, a mother-in-law who moved in to help out with the twins…who are now in college.
Unfortunately, not all beginning freelance writers have the luxury of dedicating a separate phone line or adding a new phone to their coverage plan for business purposes.
Neither do they have the airfare to fly across the country just to get some face time (highly beneficial for some projects) with a new client who wants to go over the scope of a project.
The point is, there might be times when you need options, and the more professional-looking and –performing those options are, the better.
Google Voice provides users with one telephone number for use with any phone, free calls within the United States, and voicemail capabilities.
Likewise, both Skype and Yahoo! Messenger provide free Internet calls within the United States and also allows users to talk with one another face-to-face. Yahoo! Messenger even offers IM conferencing, so you can chat with more than one person at a time.
Signing up for Google Voice, Skype, and Yahoo! accounts is both easy and free. Spend some time today to set up your accounts and wander around the sites. Find out if you have friends who use any of them, and then practice using each account with those friends.
