Choosing The Words That Change Our Lives

Oh, wherefore art thou, word that changed my life?

Day 1 Blog Challenge Question:

Is there a word that has changed, or could change your life? What is it, and what difference would it make?

Yes. There is a list of words that have changed my life and I expect, in time, there will be many more.

“Yes” was one. “No” was another. “Won’t” and “Still” are two of the more recent ones.

They’re not fancy words. Most are monosyllabic that don’t roll off the tongue with any melodic resonance. After all, it’s the meaning of a word and how that word meaning applies that matters.

Yet, I don’t think it’s possible to pin down a single word that has changed my life. To do so, I would have to decide on a single situation and, like the words attached to them, there have been several that have changed my life – none more important than the one before or after it, as I wouldn’t be where or who I am today if each one didn’t occur.

(Individual words aside, we can’t forget the combination of words that have changed our lives. Books. Poems. Songs. Speeches. Even conversations.)

The word that changes your life is the word that, at that exact moment it’s uttered, gives a new or concrete meaning to your reality.

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.
